Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
