From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Conservative reactions to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.

Concerns Raised by Redactions

While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased transparency.

“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure

However, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.

The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.

But some do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled some rightwing voices to launch the attack.

“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Former President Campaign Releases Statement

Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.

Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted

However, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the legislative approval to pass a law requiring the files' release.

Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that included little previously unseen data.
