Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
This event takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates expected as events unfold.
